"8 Million Stories" presents TEACHERS

By Taylor Mali
www.taylormali.com

He says the problem with teachers is, "What's a kid going to learn
from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?"

He reminds the other dinner guests that it's true what they say about
teachers:

That those who can, do; those who can't, teach.

I decide to bite my tongue instead of his
and resist the urge to remind the other dinner guests
that it's also true what they say about lawyers.

Because we're eating, after all, and this is polite conversation.

"I mean, you're a teacher, Taylor"
"Be honest. What do you make?"

And I wish he hadn't done that
(asked me to be honest)
because, you see, I have a policy
about honesty and ass-kicking:
which is, if you ask for it, then I have to let you have it.

You want to know what I make?

I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.
I can make a C+ feel like a Congressional medal of honor
and I can make an A- feel like a slap in the face.
How dare you waste my time with anything less than your very best.

You wanna know what I make?

I make kids sit through 40 minutes of study hall
in absolute silence.
No, you can not work in groups.
No, you can not ask a question (so put your hand down)
Why won't I let you go to the bathroom?
Because you're bored and you don't really have to go, do you?

You wanna know what I make?

I make parents tremble in fear when I call home at around dinner time:
"Hi, This is Mr. Mali, I hope I haven't called at a bad time,
I just wanted to talk to you about something your son did today.
he said, "Leave the kid alone. I still cry sometimes, don't you?"
And it was the noblest act of courage I have ever seen.

I make parents see their children for who they are
and who they can be.

You want to know what I make?

I make kids question.
I make them criticize.
I make them apologize and mean it.
I make them write, write, write.
And then I make them read.
I make them spell definitely beautiful, definitely beautiful, definitely
beautiful
over and over again until they will never misspell
either one of those words again.
I make them show all their work in math.
And then hide it on their final drafts in English.
I make them realize that if you got this (brains)
then you follow this (heart) and if someone ever tries to judge you
by what you make, you give them this (the finger).

Let me break it down for you, so you know what I say is true:
I make a difference! What about you?

"8 Million Stories" presents Inspiration

Thelma Shelton Robinson - A recipient of a 2006 Transformation Award, Thelma's goal is to do what elders in her family and neighborhood have always taught her, to "keep on keeping on." For Thelma this happens through poetic storytelling, a natural extension of herself.

As a 74-year-old African American woman born and raised in South Philadelphia, her gift for storytelling was passed on to her through her father, a master storyteller. After 34 years of service with the City of Philadelphia, she retired and began pursuing her love of poetry and storytelling. Through poetic rhyme she tells stories about Black history in Philadelphia -- ranging from stories about the injustice of Corrine Sykes' trial to the boycott of Tasty-Kake products led by Black ministers to the story of the first Black men to drive trolleys -- at venues like the Afro-American Museum, Painted Bride Arts Center, and Robin's Bookstore. These stories stand as significant pieces of history, many of which are not well known. Following many of her storytelling performances, Thelma is approached by other elders who share their own "back-in-the-day" stories and in this story swap her work as a storyteller and its importance in community is validated. Emphasizing the importance of learning from the past, her stories illustrate the old African truth symbolized by a Sankofa bird that is looking back over its shoulder, proving that "you cannot know where you are going, if you do not know where you've been."

When People Dissapoint Us / We encounter the jagged stone)

When People Dissapoint Us / We encounter the jagged stone)
Current mood: awake
Category: Blogging

We can choose to see most clearly that which they presented as their best selves.

Though it may be an illusion..most illusions come with some semblence of light.

So focus on the light; knowing in everything there is likely some. Please know that there are traits and actions typical of jagged stones and be able to identify it.

That which they present as their best selves is better than what we would ever choose to have them be. What we would have them be is likely something they never aspired to and will never be. We have no control over them, but great control over ourselves.

When we do this, I believe we are then not denying ourselves of truth; nor are we denying that person of what may be their dream when we decide to reflect on the best of them as we let go. We empower ourselves to be free from the illusion as we see it disappear and simultaneously remove ourselves from the equation.

Why?

Because the reality is many people often bring little to the table and it is only the uncommon - spectacular person that does not do that. The uncommon - spectacular person has and even now disappoints someone.

What the average person does is not for the greater good. It is often for themselves and sometimes they are not even aware of that.

What they complain about is not for us to fix. It is maybe something for us to listen to if we choose, have compassion towards and as they make their mistakes...we can learn from it if we decide that is what we want to do.

The next time someone does not deliver, doesn't show up, doesn't call, doesn't tell the truth, doesn't pay up. Isn't gracious, is dark ....is offensive, is just plain wrong, we can remember they serve a purpose. Take from it the lesson and move on.

We'll know then that being disappointed is commonplace and we must be extraodinary to not be disappointed.

We will have decided then that we will not be disappointed as we understand that to be disappointed is to remove ourselves from the light, to set aside our mission and get off the path to our greater selves.

That is not allowed. If we are disciplined and truly obedient to the higher calling of towards the perfect self, it will not happen. It can't happen. I for one have decided to instead take the lesson , build my intellect and move on. As this walking tour becomes difficult remember I tell you this, You're being prepared for the peaking in your experience by encountering this jagged stone that may seem harmful during your climb. This jagged stone may have been regarded as a friend; necessary to make the climb a true climb, but not a part of your best self.

I know that is hard to fathom , but it is so. Often.

Study folks, watch for their consistencies or the lack thereof. Notice their patterns, signs of instability and decide if that fits into the plan of the greater good laid out for you. Acknowledge if this disappointing quality is a pattern and if so you should plan to disengage. The sooner the better as it can truly make you sick to keep on with a person that sets aside your feelings, needs, mission, to accomplish their own selfish agendas. You know when things have happened time and time again and set you aside. It is not good.

We can make a conscious decision to engage with truly spectacular people. They are easily identifiable. They communicate openly and honestly, they are careful and practical about realtionships. Not irresponsible, desparate and impractical. They honor their spirits and mind in practice daily. They honor yours just the same. They do not take you for granted; and in your realtionship their interactions with you is mutually regarded as a gift. They are gracious and will call just to see just about you as you do them. You are not a fill for each other , but instead well intentioned soula that add value to each others life.

They get the notion of KARMA. They are people who practice what they preach. They are not false. People who seek help when they have heard more than twice the same theme (from other people) in response to them, their behavior and character, and how they are percieved; even if that perception is wrong. They are open and actively doing the work towards their better selves and it is obvious in their conduct. The operate in a sane place and are devoted to being real.

Spectacular people are different from people who lack contribution from their experience, lack follow-through, lack self -respect and are devoid of respect for others. They are methodical and deliberate in creating joy. The are considerate of others, time, feelings, conditions. Confident and enthusiastic. Responsible. Gracious. They listen to the voice of higher intuition and without faer of opinion they will leave a sitaution wher the energy is not good and exercise their power to positively change a situation when a change is needed.

The truly spectular people actually build the table that they are bringing something to and they have a confident humility that does not require them to head it.

They are multidimensional; not complicated. There is a difference. They are wonderful to be around. They are rare and their energy is endangered because the "common folk" with their inconsistencies, fake conversations, dramas, fleeting thoughts, indecisiveness, and insincerity are draining and unfoitunately exist in large volumes.

They are not on a mission to be by pretending to be well through haphazard interactions. They are instead stimuli of wellness itself. They take their past and acknowledge that their survival is because they are due a better future an they conduct themselves as if that future is today. If that means getting professional help, they seek it, find it, accept it, and apply it so that they may light up their corner of the world. They don't refuse to acknowledge their impact or lack thereof. They do not just take from others. They give graciously as well. They are not obivilous and do not complain about how they are treated, what they don't get and are not so egotistical that they don't realize that the actions, spiritual lack, and issues of remorse and regret are much the same as they carry out on others themselves.

If we who are spectacular; consistent and genuine invest too much in time and energy in disappointing people our joy light suffers and that is never good.

We must shine our light and in knowing that they are disappointing to us, we must get out of their way. Their way is off our path. Their way is on the side or on the path that we were not appointed to. What do we do when we believe they are where we need to be; along our path? Put our blinders on if they seem to be standing on the sideline of our path and focus; charge on fully lighted.

The joy light promotes, growth, healing, dreams fulfilled. It is the most necessary thing to get to that better place. It evokes laughter...always. Kinetic; ticklish joy!

Genuine laughter is not nervous; don't know what to do; don't know what to say; fleeting laughter. That comes from not facing what is real. That don't know how to deal laughter is the worst. It's not laughter it's more like what hyenas do. They are vicious hunters that can tear down the biggest game. Like the disppointing can tear down the biggest spirit if we let them.

The knowing of the better place, the anticipation, the path to it ..requires that we not allow ourselves to be absorbed by the dissappointment created by others.

When people disappoint us , we do not have to become matyrs; nor do we have top be the Harriet Tubman's of the day. She already did it and so ..be glad for the coming before us and walk the path that is already lighted. Stay above ground! Realize that he truth of dissapointment is not getting what we woudl have designed from someone or an event outside of ourselves.

Do not allow the false distinction or lack of distinction (as the case may be) rob you of your joy light.

The lack of authenticity ,dishonesty, inconsistency, instability is something we all experience at one time or another. That is to be acknowledged and measured for compassion based on one question when you are experiencing negative effects and that type of dissapointment.

"Is that what I have to contribute to this person/ exprience and is that what I am giving out?"

If the answer is Yes...then disengage. Involve yourself in something else that coincides with the positive energy and the carriage of the Joy Light. Invest in some you time. Solitude can get you back. Prayer and Meditation will deloiver you further away and closer to your peaking point.

Disappointing people and actions are everywhere. But control is of where you are. It has a lighted gate and can be secured. We don't have to let them in .

Sometimes they do get in and then we realize that they are disappointing. Don't get angry. You can flee. Feel free to explain your fleeing to anyone in your space that may not be as sensitive to what you picked up. Explian your retreat if it is your choice, but retreat to a better place nonetheless.

This sometimes happens over a short period of time, immediately even and other times over a longer course.

When we adopt discipline, virtue, righteousness as a base requirement for living awake, these things fall away. We are full and secure in our appointment with the Higher Spirit and that is for many an absorbtion in of greater living, contentment, gracious charity ( not pitiful and exhausting giving), a peaceful heart, and immense self love and love of higher living

Remember now, " Most people are common folk." Nothing spectacular about them really until they decide that the paths of their lives require light and turn it on.

When it is on ... we need worry not about the foolish who work to disappoint.

Just know that the do not have the knowledge you do.

When our light is own we are more capable of distinguishing when others hey have yet to discover their own appointment.

Uuuuuuummmh!

Light, love, clear appointment.

The Style Files

Dear Mailon,

I notice that some colognes smell like perfume to me. Do you wear cologne, and if so, which ones, and how do you choose something that doesn't make you smell like a girl?

Thanks,

John B., Cincinnati, OH

A: Fragrance is all about marketing. That is why the bottles look as pretty as they do. Personally, a scent is more than just a scent. Rest assured there is nothing appreciated by women more than a full set of teeth and a man who smells good. Scents like Issey Miyake are old favorites. I would also recommend Allure by Chanel and L'Occitane fragrances,(I love the Grean Tea). If you really want try something different, try combining scents in layers just like clothing. For body oils, you can't go wrong with Egyptian Musk. Don't overdue it.

Dear Mailon,

Mailon, I have a clean-shaven head like you. My buddy tells me that when I wear a tie, with or without a jacket, he says I look like a balloon on a string. Is there anything to this, or is he just talking smack?

Phil M, Hollywood, CA

A: Unless your head is a primary color like blue or red and your wearing one of those thin leather ties you wore in the 80's. Needless to say, I love my bald head, you should too...and hats are always cool.

Stand strong, my chromed brother, you can always pick up one of these. I have used this for a couple of years now. It's available at www.headblade.com...and for goodness sake take that damn thin leather tie off. Piano Keys?!

Dear Mailon,

I like that you have something to say and it doesn't hurt that you are gourgeous. Mailon, I love your skin. It's perfect. At least my me and my girls think so. I've been developing big, puffy bags and dark circles under my eyes recently. I've tried eye creams, tea bags, cucumbers and ice packs. Nothing seems to work. What do you think it is and how do I get rid of it?

Stephanie P, Springfield, Ill.

A: Some of my less optimistic friends would suspect kidney trouble, but some people are actually predisposed to bags and dark circles. So lets start simple...

1. Take a vacation
2. Drink lots and lots of water to flush yourself out
3. Start drinking green tea instead of coffee
4. Stop smoking
5. Call up your producer and director friends and tell them about me. (Obviously, you and your friends are extremely tasteful and shrewd judges of talent). :-)

Seriously though, don’t laugh but a lot of runway and print models use Preparation H for temporary unpacking of their bags between hard party nights and their steady model diet of cigarettes and water. Now don’t interpret this as medical advice, but it does work to shrink down swelling and puffiness around the eyes. Let me know how it works out.

"Cultural Creatives" change the World!

Imagine a kitchen table, round. Pots of coffee and tea and hot chocolate sit steaming on the table next to some big mugs. You stand at the doorway, looking in. Someone rises from the table, smiles and beckons to you. You can smell cinnamon buns baking in the oven, and the chairs look comfortable.

Will you enter? Accept the invitation to stay awhile? If so, a conversation can begin, or continue. You can pick up the threads that are weaving a new cultural fabric, adding in your own, developing the pattern further. Or perhaps you'll just sit quietly for now, noticing how the pattern forms and changes, how the contrasts add complexity and depth.

Toward the end of Crow and Weasel, Barry Lopez's fable about a quest to a new land, the wise old Badger describes the power of life stories. Telling true stories of where you've been and what you've seen is the way that people care for each other, she explains.

Cultural Creatives need this kind of caring now. Making their way towards a new territory of values, they need to hear true stories of others who are also making this journey. It can be bread for the journey. Indeed, as Badger says, "sometimes a person needs a story more than food to stay alive."

The new ideas, solutions, social inventions that you and your friends are developing; or that you're thinking about; or that you have seen and been inspired by in your neighborhood or workplace.

Q: How does this affect our schools? Why should this help violent kids?
A: Because anything that can help these kids deal with their high levels of pain and arousal and lack of focus, any way that can help them to manage their emotions other than leaving their bodies or taking it out on somebody else, is bound to be useful. And there's something more. As Professor James Garbarino puts it, "Only the person who is not fully alive, who is dead inside, can commit acts of violence. For anyone who loves life and is spiritually fulfilled, such acts are incomprehensible to them."

It is a beginning. With programs or inventions that are turning around what looked like intractable social problems. Or films, books, theatre pieces, music that points the way to a deeper understanding of what's important now.

How does something really new get started? Doesn't it always come from some kind of openness, a longing to make sense of something that doesn't make sense yet? It's from this place of not knowing that the most penetrating questions come, the ones we desperately need now in this era of massive changes. Something has to slice through the old frames of reference so we can see our way to a new clarity. That was Martin Luther King Jr.'s brilliance.

So whether your questions are brilliant or just pesky, if they are about creating a new culture and/or the personal issues that go with that, please think carefully about what we can all create together.
